چکیده

PURPOSE The design of turbo spin-echo sequences is modeled as a dynamic optimization problem which includes the case of inhomogeneous transmit radiofrequency fields. This problem is efficiently solved by optimal control techniques making it possible to design patient-specific sequences online. THEORY AND METHODS The extended phase graph formalism is employed to model the signal evolution. The design problem is cast as an optimal control problem and an efficient numerical procedure for its solution is given. The numerical and experimental tests address standard multiecho sequences and pTx configurations. RESULTS Standard, analytically derived flip angle trains are recovered by the numerical optimal control approach. New sequences are designed where constraints on radiofrequency total and peak power are included. In the case of parallel transmit application, the method is able to calculate the optimal echo train for two-dimensional and three-dimensional turbo spin echo sequences in the order of 10 s with a single central processing unit (CPU) implementation. The image contrast is maintained through the whole field of view despite inhomogeneities of the radiofrequency fields. CONCLUSION The optimal control design sheds new light on the sequence design process and makes it possible to design sequences in an online, patient-specific fashion. Designing RF Refocusing Pulses for Parallel Transmit Spin Echo Sequences

INTRODUCTION Parallel transmission of RF pulses [1, 2] has shown great potential in B1 inhomogeneity correction at high fields [3]. Most of the existing applications of parallel transmission, however, have been restricted to only gradient echo due to lack of systematic design of parallel transmit refocusing pulses. The difficulty of designing such pulses lies in that 1) the large flip angle nat...

Assessment of the Characteristics of MRI Coils in Terms of RF Non-Homogeneity Using Routine Spin Echo Sequences

Introduction: One of the major causes of image non-uniformity in MRI is due to the existence of  non-homogeneity in RF receive and transmit. This can be the most effective source of error in  quantitative  studies  in  MRI  imaging.  Part  of  this  non-homogeneity  demonstrates  the  characteristics of RF coil and part of it is due to the interaction of RF field with the material being  imaged...

Joint Design of Excitation and Refocusing Pulses for Fast Spin Echo Sequences in Parallel Transmission

INTRODUCTION Fast spin echo (FSE) sequence [1] has been widely used in various MR applications, which, like other sequences, can suffer from the inhomogeneous B1 at high field. Parallel transmission of RF pulses [2, 3] has been shown to be quite effective in correcting B1 inhomogeneity. However, no FSE application with parallel transmission has been seen in the literature yet primarily due to t...

Waveform Design using Second Order Cone Programming in Radar Systems

Transmit waveform design is one of the most important problems in active sensing and communication systems. This problem, due to the complexity and non-convexity, has been always the main topic of many papers for the decades. However, still an optimal solution which guarantees a global minimum for this multi-variable optimization problem is not found. In this paper, we propose an attracting met...

Comparison of MR pulse sequences in the detection of multiple sclerosis lesions.

PURPOSE To compare the sensitivity of conventional spin-echo, fast spin-echo, fast fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), and turbo gradient spin-echo MR sequences in the detection of multiple sclerosis lesions. METHODS Conventional spin-echo, fast spin-echo, fast FLAIR, and turbo gradient spin-echo sequences were performed on a 1.0-T MR imager in seven patients with clinically definite...
